J-1 Fixed Admission Period: What Teachers and Interns/Trainees Need to Know

Effective September 15, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is replacing the open-ended “Duration of Status” (D/S) system with a specific Admit Until Date (AUD) on your I-94 record.

 

The most important thing to know:

No immediate action is required by most teachers. Teacher Lounge manages your SEVIS record and DS-2019. We will contact you directly if your situation requires any additional immigration filing or action.

 

Key highlights for Teachers and Interns/Trainees

  • Your 5-Year Max Limit Is Unchanged: The Department of State rules governing the Teacher category still apply. You are still eligible for 4th- and 5th-year extensions.
  • Admit Until Date (AUD): Your I-94 arrival record will now show a specific end date rather than “D/S”. This date may sometimes differ from the end date on your DS-2019 or visa expiration.
  • Keep Us Updated: Under the new rule, it is especially important to notify Teacher Lounge promptly about contract renewals, program extensions, international travel, or changes in employment.

Does this rule automatically shorten my current J-1 program?

No. It does not shorten your approved Teacher program. Teacher Lounge will continue to maintain your SEVIS record and DS-2019.

No. If you are already in the U.S. under Duration of Status, you do not automatically receive a new expiration date on September 15. However, transition rules apply if your Program End Date is later extended or if you travel internationally

Yes, as permitted under standard Teacher category rules:

  • If you have an AUD on your I-94: We can extend your DS-2019 in SEVIS up to that Admit Until Date. If your extension goes beyond your AUD, an additional immigration step (a USCIS filing or departing/re-entering the U.S.) will be required. Teacher Lounge will guide you through this.
  • If you are currently in D/S: Teacher Lounge will add an Expected Completion Date to your SEVIS record before September 15, 2026. You can generally extend up to that date without a separate USCIS filing.

The Department of State approval process still applies for participation beyond three years, up to the 5-year maximum. The new DHS rule does not replace that approval process.

What is an Admit Until Date (AUD)?

The AUD is the specific date on your I-94 record through which DHS authorizes you to remain in the U.S. in J-1 status.

Not always. DHS uses your DS-2019 end date and Expected Completion Date as guidelines, but DHS makes the final admission decision (up to a 4-year maximum per entry).

Follow normal arrival instructions, upload your I-94 record when requested, and notify Teacher Lounge prior to any international travel or contract renewal updates.
